Tom Vaughn

After graduating from Perry Meridian High School, I married my high school sweetheart Jane. Over the past thirty-plus years of marriage, we’ve raised three children and spoiled two grandchildren along the way. During our time off, we’re both actively involved in working along side various multicultural organizations. Including, a strong presence with the Burmese community within Perry Township. I was honored to receive the "Lion’s Club Citizen of the Year" and currently serve as an active member of the Lion’s Club-International.

In 1996, I became a second generation law enforcement officer. Working with agencies such as the Marion County Sheriff’s Department and Indianapolis Park Rangers, progressing through the ranks and currently serving the community of Southport as Chief of Police. In addition to graduating from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, I was named by my academy peers to receive the “Herman Freed Award.” This award is given to the graduate who demonstrates the qualities of integrity, loyalty, ethics, and attitude. Additional awards I have received were the “Medal of Valor” and a nomination for “Deputy of the Year”

In addition to graduating from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, I am also certified in Arson Investigations; Detective Training; Crisis Intervention Training, with advanced training in dealing with emotionally disturbed persons; Grant Writing, ILEA Police Chief Executive Training and one of my more proud accomplishments, course work in Community Policing.

Since being sworn in as the Southport Police Chief in only four short years ago, I have lowered crime within the city each year and re-established a relationship with surrounding communities. Using my certification as an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Instructor, I was at the forefront in creating a NEW certified Police Academy for not just my officers, but those of surrounding agencies. I've accomplished all of this, by using very minimal tax dollars, leaving the department ultimately self-funded. Due to my success in leading and managing department budgets, I have been invited by other agencies to share my knowledge in this area.

It is easy to see why I am the only qualified candidate to be the next Marion County Sheriff. Maintaining a close relationship with not only my family, but also the community I have built my reputation around.

Public safety should not be about politics or career politicians. It should be about a team coming together with the desire to serve and protect the residents of Marion County, making each day safer than the previous. To do that, you need leadership, experience, compassion, accountability and pride. I hope you will join me in making the Sheriff’s Office something Marion County can be proud of once again.

Come 2018, vote Tom Vaughn for Marion County Sheriff.
